Would love for this to work better and if it did I would be a candidate for buying a viewer better than the cardboard one I got in the mail. But there was no way I could discover to get the two stereo images to converge into one 3D image.

Getting the cardboard in the mail was great fun--someone at NYT is on the ball. Merging news with VR is frickin genius. I started off with the Pluto flyover. At first, I couldnt get past the double vision on iphone 6. The trick was: 1) turning off zoom (make sure it took), 2) removing my iphone case. The resulting image is a bit pixelated but the VR is lovely. The streaming option does often lead to buffering. Youll probably need to do the download and delete later. Obviousy, this is an opening gambit, but it points a clear direction for the future. In any event, after I got past the glitches I had a lot of fun.
Nice try. The Google box was worthless. I wear reading glasses, and found all videos to be out of focus. Also, as expected, you cant watch these films sitting down, which is what I want to do after a long day. The motion was a bit unsettling, if you get motion sickness easily you might not like this. Streaming option was constantly pausing. The download solved this. Once downloaded, and viewing on just my iPhone it was better.
The lag ruins the experience and theres no way to pause it and let it load. Pause button is basically another buffer wheel.
I see other reviews that indicate problems, but with my setup (iPhone 6s, Google box, downloaded video files) the technology works perfectly-- as long as youre not expecting BlueRay-quality resolution. The concept is genius, as it allows entry into VR with fascinating videos (courtesy of the NYT) combined with virtually free hardware (the cardboard Google box). Obviously this is an early version of a technology that will grow in the future. As I see it, the main issues to overcome are resolution and file size: - the resolution limits of current model phones, which in the last couple of years had reached the "good enough" level, are not sufficient to really show off this close-up (optically magnified) technology - file sizes are enormous, with a couple of minutes of VR video consuming half a Gb. Anyway, considering the cost (free) and wow favor (fantastic), do yourself a favor and plunge in!
It wont play video, just sound. Downloaded or streaming- neither works. >:-!
Make sure to check out the buffalo video: the buffalos come up close to the camera and it feels like theyre very close!
Yes Google Cardboard is low tech, but to me that added to the experience. A simple tool combined with a handheld supercomputer enables immersion into another time and place. Looking around and being able to see others while politicians speak is slightly off-putting or voyeuristic, but does add a new depth of understanding. Great start and the future is bright with VR + news!
This app is super cool and theres a wide variety of videos on here that are all a unique experience from going to Pluto to the ocean to the stage. Some of them are also really funny. Like the presidential candidate one where Ted Cruz says hes going to win the nomination and presidency which is hilarious because he dropped out.
The video looked incredible, but unlike other VR apps Ive tried, the NYTVR app gives two overlapping 2D images instead of a single 3D image. Totally useless.
Fixed the problems I had using the FAQ section of the app. Loved the surprise gift. Thanks NYT!
Content looks amazing, but only cardboard support. Very sad.
I got the Google cardboard in the mail because I have a NYT subscription but it is very cool without using it. Some amazing videos are available to view with this app!
Im sure this is great when it is actually compatible with the device. Alas. Other apps like VRSE have figured this out and work fine, but even without display zoom, this app still doesnt show a unified stereo 3D image. Given that many phones are the same size as the 6 Plus, its surprising to read that this issue was noted in 2015, and still isnt fixed. Come on, guys.
Ive downloaded the app several times and their support email advice was not helpful. It used to work before last upgrade. Oh well.
This app provided me an opportunity to check out VR - its fun!
You should improve the VR User Interface to match that if the other apps, and allow 3D VR Controls, using the capacitive button located on the top right of most Google Cardboard Viewers.
Description says it works with the iPhone 6 Plus but I could not get the two images to line up after quite a bit of fiddling
The NYTVR app worked very well the first time I used it to fly by Pluto. Since then every time I open the app it gives me a blank, dark screen. Using 6s.
Very interesting way to tell stories. (Works fine on my 6 Plus despite the other complaints)
